Writing Mistakes (11-20)
Mistake 11: No paragraph breaks
Problem: Writing one long block of text with no breaks.
Fix: Use PEE paragraphs — Point, Example, Explanation. Each paragraph = one idea only.
Paragraph 1: Introduction (2-3 sentences)
Paragraph 2: Point 1 + Example + Explanation
Paragraph 3: Point 2 + Example + Explanation
Paragraph 4: Conclusion (2-3 sentences)
Mistake 12: No topic sentence
Problem: Paragraphs that start without telling the reader what it's about.
Fix: First sentence of every paragraph = the main point.
| ❌ Weak | ✅ Strong |
|---|---|
| "My favourite food is nasi lemak because..." | "Nasi lemak is my favourite food for three reasons." |
Mistake 13: Informal language in formal essays
| ❌ Informal (don't use) | ✅ Formal (use this) |
|---|---|
| kids | children |
| stuff | things / items |
| a lot of | many / numerous |
| really good | excellent / outstanding |
| get | obtain / receive |
| big | significant / substantial |
| happy | delighted / pleased |
| sad | devastated / distressed |
Mistake 14: No linking words
Problem: Sentences feel disconnected — no flow.
Fix: Use linking words between ideas:
| Purpose | Linking Words |
|---|---|
| Add ideas | Furthermore, Moreover, In addition, Besides |
| Show contrast | However, On the other hand, Nevertheless, Although |
| Give examples | For example, For instance, Such as, Namely |
| Show result | Therefore, As a result, Consequently, Thus |
| Conclude | In conclusion, To summarise, Ultimately |
Mistake 15: Run-on sentences
| ❌ Wrong | ✅ Correct |
|---|---|
| I went to the shop I bought bread I went home. | I went to the shop, bought bread, and went home. |
| The weather was hot we stayed indoors. | The weather was hot, so we stayed indoors. |
Rule: Use commas + linking words, or make separate sentences with full stops.
Mistake 16: Starting with "Because"
| ❌ Wrong | ✅ Correct |
|---|---|
| Because I was tired, I went home early. | I went home early because I was tired. |
Rule: In SPM essays, put the main clause FIRST, then "because" + reason. (Starting with "because" is okay in speech, but avoid it in formal writing.)
Mistake 17: "very" + adjective (lazy writing)
| ❌ Weak | ✅ Strong |
|---|---|
| very good | excellent |
| very bad | terrible |
| very big | enormous |
| very small | tiny |
| very happy | thrilled |
| very tired | exhausted |
Rule: Replace "very + adjective" with a stronger word. Shows better vocabulary.
Mistake 18: Inconsistent tense
Problem: Starting in present tense, then switching to past, then back to present.
| ❌ Wrong | ✅ Correct |
|---|---|
| Yesterday I go to the shop. I bought bread. Then I eat it. | Yesterday I went to the shop. I bought bread. Then I ate it. |
Rule: If the story happened in the past → ALL verbs in past tense.
Mistake 19: No conclusion / weak ending
| ❌ Weak | ✅ Strong |
|---|---|
| "That's all." | "In conclusion, [restate main point + final thought]." |
| "The end." | "Ultimately, [summarise + opinion/prediction]." |
| (no conclusion at all) | "Therefore, it is clear that [main argument]." |
Rule: Always end with a proper conclusion paragraph (2-3 sentences).
Mistake 20: Not answering the question
Problem: Writing about the general topic instead of answering the specific question.
Fix: Read the question 3 times. Circle keywords. Before writing each paragraph, check: "Does this answer the question?"
| Question asks... | ❌ Student writes about | ✅ Student should write about |
|---|---|---|
| "Why is exercise important?" | Different types of exercise | REASONS why exercise matters (health, mental, social) |
| "Describe a person you admire" | A list of people they admire | ONE person + specific qualities + examples |
