The 5 Question Types (Memorise These)
Type 1: Direct Answer (Literal)
The answer is directly in the text. Just copy/paraphrase.
Clue words: "Who...", "What...", "Where...", "When...", "How many..."
Technique:
- Find the keyword in the question
- Scan the passage for that keyword
- The answer is in the SAME sentence or the next one
- Copy the relevant phrase (change 1-2 words so it's not copying word-for-word)
Example:
Question: "Why did the villagers move to the city?"
Passage says: "The villagers left their homes because the drought had destroyed their crops."
Answer: "Because the drought had destroyed their crops."
Type 2: Inference (Reading Between the Lines)
The answer is NOT directly stated. You must deduce from context.
Clue words: "Why do you think...", "What can you infer...", "This suggests that..."
Technique:
- Find the relevant paragraph
- Look for clues (feelings, actions, descriptions)
- Combine 2 clues to make a logical conclusion
- Use this formula: "Because [clue 1], the writer/character [conclusion]"
Example:
Passage: "Siti stared at the letter for a long time. Her hands trembled as she opened it."
Question: "How did Siti feel about the letter?"
Answer: "Siti felt anxious and nervous about the letter because her hands trembled and she stared at it for a long time."
Type 3: Vocabulary in Context
You must guess the meaning of a word from the context.
Clue words: "What does the word '___' mean?", "The word '___' refers to..."
Technique:
- Read the sentence BEFORE and AFTER the word
- Look for: synonyms, antonyms (opposites), or explanations nearby
- Replace the word with your guess — does the sentence still make sense?
- Write the meaning in your OWN words
Example:
What is the passage mostly about? Clue words: "What is the main idea?", "The writer's purpose is to...", "The best title for this passage is..." Technique: Decide if a statement is true, false, or not mentioned. Technique: ⚠️ Common Mistake: If you can't find it, don't assume False. It might be "Not Stated". Passage: "The River of Life project was launched in 2017 to clean up the Klang River. The government spent RM4 billion on the project. Although the water is now cleaner, some sections still smell bad during the dry season."
Passage: "The old man was very frugal. Unlike his rich friends who spent freely, he saved every sen."
Question: "What does 'frugal' mean?"
Answer: "Frugal means careful with money — someone who saves and does not spend freely."
Type 4: Main Idea / Purpose
Type 5: True / False / Not Stated
Answer When to Choose True The passage SUPPORTS the statement False The passage CONTRADICTS the statement Not Stated The passage DOES NOT MENTION it at all
Step-by-Step Strategy for Exam
Step 1: Skim (2 minutes)
Step 2: Read Questions First (1 minute)
Step 3: Scan and Answer (10 minutes)
Step 4: Check (2 minutes)
Answering Formula for Each Question Type
Question Type Formula Example Direct Copy + paraphrase "Because [reason from text]" Inference Clue + Clue = Conclusion "Because [clue 1] and [clue 2], [conclusion]" Vocabulary Context + own words "The word means [definition] because [context clue]" Main Idea Topic + Purpose "The passage is about [topic] and shows [main point]" True/False Find evidence "True — the passage says [evidence]"
Words That Signal Answers in the Passage
Signal Word What It Means Because / Since / As → Answer for "Why" questions Therefore / Thus / So → Answer for "What happened next" However / But / Although → Answer for contrast/difference questions For example / Such as → Answer for "Give an example" questions The most / The best → Answer for main idea / purpose Firstly / Finally → Answer for sequence/process questions
Common Mistakes That Lose Marks
Mistake Fix Answering with just "Yes" or "No" Always add because + evidence: "Yes, because..." Copying the whole sentence Paraphrase — change 2-3 words Guessing without reading ALWAYS find the answer in the text Not reading the whole question Circle keywords: WHO, WHAT, WHY, HOW Writing answers that are too long Keep answers to 1-2 sentences max
Quick Practice
Question Type Answer When was the project launched? Direct In 2017 How much was spent? Direct RM4 billion Was the project completely successful? Inference No, because some sections still smell bad during the dry season, showing the project is not fully complete What does "launched" mean here? Vocabulary Started or began — the project was started in 2017
Final Tip: Reading comprehension is about FINDING answers, not KNOWING answers. Everything you need is in the passage. Practice the 5 question types and you'll score 15/15.
