The 5 Question Types (Memorise These)

Type 1: Direct Answer (Literal)

The answer is directly in the text. Just copy/paraphrase.

Clue words: "Who...", "What...", "Where...", "When...", "How many..."

Technique:

  1. Find the keyword in the question
  2. Scan the passage for that keyword
  3. The answer is in the SAME sentence or the next one
  4. Copy the relevant phrase (change 1-2 words so it's not copying word-for-word)

Example:

Question: "Why did the villagers move to the city?"
Passage says: "The villagers left their homes because the drought had destroyed their crops."
Answer: "Because the drought had destroyed their crops."

Type 2: Inference (Reading Between the Lines)

The answer is NOT directly stated. You must deduce from context.

Clue words: "Why do you think...", "What can you infer...", "This suggests that..."

Technique:

  1. Find the relevant paragraph
  2. Look for clues (feelings, actions, descriptions)
  3. Combine 2 clues to make a logical conclusion
  4. Use this formula: "Because [clue 1], the writer/character [conclusion]"

Example:

Passage: "Siti stared at the letter for a long time. Her hands trembled as she opened it."
Question: "How did Siti feel about the letter?"
Answer: "Siti felt anxious and nervous about the letter because her hands trembled and she stared at it for a long time."

Type 3: Vocabulary in Context

You must guess the meaning of a word from the context.

Clue words: "What does the word '___' mean?", "The word '___' refers to..."

Technique:

  1. Read the sentence BEFORE and AFTER the word
  2. Look for: synonyms, antonyms (opposites), or explanations nearby
  3. Replace the word with your guess — does the sentence still make sense?
  4. Write the meaning in your OWN words

Example:

Passage: "The old man was very frugal. Unlike his rich friends who spent freely, he saved every sen."
Question: "What does 'frugal' mean?"
Answer: "Frugal means careful with money — someone who saves and does not spend freely."

Type 4: Main Idea / Purpose

What is the passage mostly about?

Clue words: "What is the main idea?", "The writer's purpose is to...", "The best title for this passage is..."

Technique:

  1. Read the FIRST paragraph (usually introduces the topic)
  2. Read the LAST paragraph (usually concludes with the main point)
  3. The main idea connects ALL paragraphs
  4. Use this formula: "The passage is about [topic] and shows that [main point]."

Type 5: True / False / Not Stated

Decide if a statement is true, false, or not mentioned.

Technique:

AnswerWhen to Choose
TrueThe passage SUPPORTS the statement
FalseThe passage CONTRADICTS the statement
Not StatedThe passage DOES NOT MENTION it at all

⚠️ Common Mistake: If you can't find it, don't assume False. It might be "Not Stated".

Step-by-Step Strategy for Exam

Step 1: Skim (2 minutes)

  • Read the passage quickly — don't stop for difficult words
  • Understand: Who? What? Where? When? Why?
  • Note the MAIN TOPIC of each paragraph

Step 2: Read Questions First (1 minute)

  • Read ALL questions before answering
  • Circle keywords in each question
  • Know what you're looking for

Step 3: Scan and Answer (10 minutes)

  • For each question, find the keyword in the passage
  • Read 2 sentences before and after
  • Write your answer using the technique for that question type

Step 4: Check (2 minutes)

  • Does your answer actually answer the question?
  • Is your answer from the correct paragraph?
  • Did you write in complete sentences (not just yes/no)?
